After her night with the family, both parents and siblings together, she managed to get home in enough time to change...and then see CJ out the door so she could finish getting ready for her date. If she could call it that, anyway, being that she'd never met the man in question in person.

Something about him got to her, though. The coarse way he talked, then the equally brusque yet sweet gesture of sending her a dress and all but telling her they were going to have dinner. He was challenging her to a lot, and she was strangely thrilled by the idea of rising to meet it.

The dress itself fit like a dream. She had to assume that he got her measurements from the magazine, and got lucky with having exceptional taste. She liked the way it looked and felt on her, and didn't bother with much more jewelry than the gaudy set that Cadence had given her. It didn't exactly match the outfit, but Anne hardly cared. She adored the gift and wanted to show it off...especially with the man coming to pick her up.

Adding a touch of makeup to the outfit, she slid her feet into a pair of low heels and set to work switching from her usual purse to the small black clutch she'd decided to use for the evening. She had no idea how punctual Leo was, but in the back of her head she was hoping he was even a little early.

She was really looking forward to meeting him.

She'd probably forget the date, but four off-key renditions of "Happy Birthday" via cell phone and a Hallmark card with a twenty dollar bill from her Paw Paw remind her yet again that she really should be grateful to be alive.

Even in the air conditioned terminal, the oppressive heat beat down through the exposed windows with a promise of sweat and slow movement to all who dared step outside its sanctuary. The desert was unforgiving in the heart of summer, making up for weeks of unseasonably cool weather.

Inside the airport, heat of another kind was building as Anne strolled through the crowd, nostrils flared and eyes alert as she scanned the building for some trace of him. She knew he was there, could feel it like a phantom breath on the back of her neck, but the heat magnified every scent and the saving AC blew scents every which way, recirculating the air until it became too rich with smells, tainted by the scent of Freon and too much electricity.

She saw him before she smelled him, seated at a table with a coffee and a newspaper. The break in the crowd was just long enough for her to see him bring the cup to his lips and slow to a stop midway. His neck flushed with the same heat as he found her, as his head lifted and tipped back just a touch too far.

( He was sniffing the air. He was looking for her. )

“Anne! You’re up next!”

“I’m coming, hang on!” twenty three year old Anne Forsythe huffed, realizing she’d have to forego rouge for the time being. Pinching her cheeks for color, she decided they’d hold up under three minutes beneath the lights, and the workout would heighten her color. Making sure her jewelry was in place, she carefully trotted to the backstage entrance just as the announcer finished her intro.

“…one of the top acts here at The Body Shop, ready to sizzle is the alluring, the sultry…Wisteria!!”

The soft, percussive beat of Peggy Lee’s “Fever” began, soothing Anne a little as she let one gloved hand appear in the spotlight that shone by the stage entrance, snapping in time to the beat. When she took the stage, she was a vision in black and diamonds, from her five inch heels to the elbow-length opera gloves to the slinky satin gown clinging to her frame.

In other news, I'm deliciously exhausted. Daddy took me, Mama, CJ, Harv, and Christine to see Aretha Franklin at the Bowl last night. She was just amazing, a voice like hers can't be humanly possible. We picnicked in our seats, and I forgot my jacket of course. Daddy lent me his...he's such a gentleman. Probably why Mama married him. ;)

You like to flirt and show off your body, but what confident woman doesn't. You enjoy male attention, and you're usually pretty good at not leading men on. However, there are times when you get carried away with your sexy behavior. It's okay to use your amazing flirting powers for good - but never for evil!

Cleveland's interesting, by the way, and the Hall of Fame is incredible. Cadence, sweetie, I got you some fantastic souvenirs. Did some antiquing in Cincinnati, and I have all kinds of stories to tell about the boy I met there. I'll be leaving tomorrow afternoon to come home, so I'll see you all soon.

Now when I get home, I just have to get back to the task of moving. So much to do...
